Courland Grove Baptist Church is nicely located in the London Borough of Lambeth, between Stockwell (with its tube connections) and Clapham, in South-West London. The church was established in 1840 and its main worship auditorium is a listed building. It`s building has recently been extended into a community hall with additional facilities for discipleship training, youth and community events. The church belongs to the Association of Grace Baptist Churches South East, and who are the church trustees.
The church is located opposite the beautiful Larkhall Park, which provides excellent facilities for families and sporting facilities such as football and tennis courts. This provides excellent opportunities for the church to connect with the local community: most of whom turn up in the park for sport every Sunday morning!
Clapham in particular has a great and distinguished history. It was the home of William Wilberforce and The Clapham Sect: a group of Church of England social reformers at the beginning of the 19th century. Wilberforce was one of the most prominent members of the Clapham Sect: an English politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. He was the MP for Yorkshire and an Evangelical Christian. He was convinced of the importance of the Christian faith, Christian morality and education – and he championed causes and campaigns, particularly the complete abolition of slavery, which led to the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 and its abolition eventually across the British Empire.
Courland Grove Baptist Church is pleased to be located in an area which is known for such great history and Christian heritage. The church is known historically for its strongly Evangelical and Baptist heritage, and also in more recent years for its lively and Holy Spirit led worship and social action.
